I hope you are all well and have had a lovely weekend! Recently Barry M released a range of matte liquid lip kits which I was very excited about as Barry M is such a great affordable, cruelty free brand and if you know me by now, I live for liquid lippys!! I picked up the shade ‘Pose.’ Last year when Kylie’s cosmetics range was fairly new, I purchased two of her lip kits (Candy K and Dolce K) but never did a review on them or have really mentioned them on my blog before. I thought it would be interesting to compare both the Barry M lip kit I have in the shade ‘Pose’ and the Kylie Cosmetics lip kit in the shade ‘Candy K’ because let me tell you, they are pretty damn similar!! I hope you enjoy my lovelies…
First Impressions & Packaging:
To start off, the Barry M lip kit comes with a liquid lipstick and a lip liner which is the same as Kylie’s lip kits which also contain a liquid lipstick and a lip liner. Since Kylie launched her lip kits a lot of brands also released liquid lipsticks and tried to dupe them but Barry M have released actual lip kits which is fab instead of just liquid lipsticks singularly. Although the lip kits are very similar, they are in VERY different price ranges with Kylie’s lip kits being $29.00 which is the equivalent of £23 and the Barry M ones only being at a fraction of the price for £6.99.
Packaging wise, I much prefer the Kylie Cosmetics box with the statement logo to the Barry M packaging which is more plain but for a drugstore product I’m not really bothered too much on the packaging as it’s more the product I’m interested in. Even though I’m not a huge fan on the Barry M packaging, I prefer the size of the box as I think a lot of the packaging of Kylie’s lip kits is a bit oversized compared. Although the box that the lip kits come in aren’t that similar, the actual packaging of the products are very alike. Let’s just say I think Barry M have taken some ‘inspiration’ from Kylie Jenner’s lip kits, especially the lip liners as I must admit it’s sometimes difficult to tell which ones which! The Kylie Cosmetics liquid lipstick comes in a larger bottle so you get more product but the Barry M one is still a reasonable size.
In terms of shades, as you can see on the photos below they are a very close match with ‘Pose’ being a bit of a lighter pinky nude and ‘Candy K’ being slightly darker but they aren’t that different. If I’m honest I think I prefer the shade of the Barry M lip kit as I’m into more nudes and pinky nudes at the moment and I like the fact that it is a bit lighter than Candy K as it’s a more everyday shade.
The Lip Liners:
When I apply the Kylie Cosmetics lip liner I can instantly tell that it is high quality as it glides on the lips which makes it very easy to apply and it is genuinely one of the best lip liners I have ever used. I would say it was more of a crayon than a pencil which I prefer compared to the Barry M lip liner. Although the Barry M lip liner does the job, it’s harder to apply and doesn’t glide on as nicely but it’s still a great lip liner that I’m sure most people won’t find an issue with. As the shades of the products are so similar, especially the lip liners I tend to use the Kylie Cosmetics lip liner and the Barry M liquid lipstick and the two combined make a perfect match and I would use the Candy K lip liner with various other lipsticks also. One thing I would say is, the Barry M lip liner is so much easier to sharpen as it is a pencil rather than in a plastic tube.
The Liquid Lipstick:
The Kylie Cosmetics liquid lipstick itself is the main thing that everyone hypes about! I find that the formula is quite watery which means you have to apply a thin layer on your lips. I find that they are very drying and also look quite dry on your lips which is slightly disappointing. Having said that, I can definitely see why they are hyped about so much as they stay on my lips all day and when I was taking the lip swatch photos, it was very difficult to remove which shows how long lasting they are and overall are a great high quality lip kit. Also did I mention that they smell AMAZING!?
The Barry M liquid lipstick is a nicer formula that doesn’t make my lips as dry which is a bonus! I would say the application is a bit harder and is a bit messy as I found that I easily went over my lip line but it’s fine once you’ve used it a few times as you know what to expect and to be a bit more careful when applying it.
The Kylie lip kits are a lot more true to colour as they look on your lips the same as they do in the bottle whereas the Barry M one look a lot lighter in the bottle than they are on your lips once they dry but they are still both similar gorgeous shades and no one is going to know that it looked lighter before it dried.
The Barry M ones are also a lot easier to remove but still last all day. Compared to the gorgeous smell of the Kylie lipsticks, they don’t really smell of anything and are a bit chemically but that’s what I expected for a drugstore product. The wands of the two lipsticks are also very similar with the Barry M one being more slanted and the Kylie Cosmetics one being more round but they aren’t that different.
Overall the two lip kits are very similar in formulation and in colour and you can save a lot of money opting for the Barry M lip kits which are such great quality and affordable that I would definitely recommend to anyone. Although I still love my Kylie lip kits and I can see why they are hyped about, I would say that Barry M have done an amazing job at trying to dupe them and I would definitely consider picking up more shades in their ‘matte me up‘ range in the future.
That brings me to the end of this weeks post! Thank you so much for reading as always and I hope you enjoyed this post and in some way found it helpful! Let me know if you have tried any of these products and what you think of them as I’d love to know your opinions on them also!?
Much Love, Amelia xx
